#1 Way to Check Your SASSA SRD Status: New App Ranked Against the 6 Options

SRD Check for SASSA R370 arrives on iOS and Android with data-free checking, offline results, family ID storage and plain-English reasons for declined months

We kept seeing people spend airtime and half a day in a queue just to find out if they had been paid. The information already exists. We wanted it to reach the person in seconds”

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, September 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- SASSA-Status.web.za has released SRD Check for SASSA R370, a free mobile app for checking the status of the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant. It is available now on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app is an independent product and is not affiliated with SASSA.

The publisher built it after watching applicants spend airtime, data and hours in queues to answer one question: has this month's SRD grant been approved, and when will it be paid.

The status check is the single action most SRD applicants repeat every month. Across a year, and across a household checking for several relatives, the airtime, transport and waiting add up. SRD Check for SASSA R370 was designed to cut that to a tap.

To mark the launch, the company has ranked the six ways South Africans currently check their SRD grant status, from the most demanding to the least.

6. Visiting a SASSA office in person

Applicants can go to a local SASSA office and ask a staff member to look up their application. Staff can see the full record, explain a decision and advise on appeals, which makes this the most thorough option for a complicated case. The cost is the day itself. Queues form before opening, transport is not free, and the trip has to be repeated every month because it produces no record that updates on its own.

5. Calling the toll-free line (0800 60 10 11)

The call costs nothing from any network, and an agent can read out each month's outcome or log a query if something looks wrong. Wait times vary a great deal and run longest at month end, when most applicants want the same answer at once. The line is voice only, so nothing is kept afterwards except what the caller writes down.

4. USSD codes (1203210# or 12069277#)

Dialling either code starts a text menu that works on any phone, including basic handsets, with no data needed. That makes USSD the most widely accessible channel SASSA offers. The menus are short, so responses tend to be a status word and little else. Reasons for a declined month are not spelled out, pay dates may be missing, and the session ends when the screen times out.

3. WhatsApp (082 046 8553)

SASSA's WhatsApp service lets applicants send their ID number and receive their status as a chat reply. It is friendlier than USSD and the reply stays in the conversation. It uses data unless the network zero-rates WhatsApp, replies slow down at peak times, and over months the history becomes a scroll of messages rather than an organised record. Decline reasons often still appear as codes.

2. The official website (srd.sassa.gov.za)

The SRD site is the most complete official source. It shows every month, the outcome for each and the pay date where one exists. Its weaknesses are practical. The site slows or goes down around payment dates, it costs data unless zero-rated, reasons appear as short codes, and there is no way to save a result and read it later without signal.

1. SRD Check for SASSA R370 (iOS / Android)

The app takes the website's data and removes the friction around it. A user enters an ID number and the phone number used to apply, taps once, and sees every month's outcome. No login, no queue, no USSD code. If the official site does not respond, the app tries a second route in the background without the user doing anything extra, so an outage on payday does not mean an unanswered check.

A data-free mode limits checks to SASSA's zero-rated connection so they draw no airtime or data bundle. The most recent result is saved on the phone with a last-updated stamp and can be read with no signal. The app checks the ID number as it is typed and flags a wrong digit before a check is wasted.
Families can save up to 10 ID numbers in the phone's secure storage. These never leave the device and can be deleted one at a time or all at once. Reminders arrive on the 15th and 20th of each month, timed to the SRD payment cycle. Payment history is grouped by year, newest first, with each month marked approved or declined, its pay date, and the reason in plain English rather than a code.

Notifications carry genuine SRD news, and a tap can only open SASSA's official site or sassa-status.web.za. A fake link cannot get through, which matters for an app that handles ID numbers.

The publisher stresses that SRD Check for SASSA R370 is not a government app and has no connection to SASSA. The ID number is used only to fetch the applicant's status. It never asks for bank details, a PIN or any document. It is free to use and supported by advertising, which is disclosed inside the app.
