Moscow Warns Escalating Gulf Conflict Could Harm Global Economy
Speaking at a press briefing, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: “The latest round of escalating tensions is fraught with new, additional negative consequences for the situation in the region and the international economy as a whole.”
Peskov urged all sides involved to avoid further escalation and emphasized the need to resume diplomatic engagement as the preferred path toward resolving the crisis.
The warning came as hostilities between Washington and Tehran entered a second consecutive day. US President Donald Trump stated that additional military action could follow unless Iran quickly agrees to a peace arrangement.
According to reports, US military forces carried out strikes against several targets in Iran between late Wednesday and early Thursday. American officials described the operation as an act of "self-defense" following the reported downing of a US helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump had previously argued that Iran had delayed negotiations for too long and said the country would face consequences as a result.
Diplomatic efforts since the ceasefire reached in April, reportedly brokered by Pakistan, have focused on securing a lasting end to the conflict that began on Feb. 28. Discussions have also centered on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route whose closure has disrupted oil and gas exports, as well as addressing unresolved issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
Earlier this week, Russia’s Foreign Ministry expressed alarm over the deteriorating security situation, saying it is “extremely concerned” by the rising tensions and urging all parties to halt military actions immediately while showing restraint.
